Quick Answer
Any material placed over a headlamp has the potential to affect transmitted light. A high-quality clear film designed for the application may have a small practical effect, but we won't publish a universal “90–95%” figure without the exact product's data. Tinted, degraded, incorrectly installed or unsuitable film can have a greater effect and may create an MOT problem.
Light Transmission Is Product-Specific
Optical performance depends on the film, adhesive, topcoat, thickness, colour, surface texture and measurement method. A marketing statement such as “virtually invisible” is not the same as a certified transmission value. Where we publish a percentage, it's sourced from the current technical data sheet for the exact headlight-approved product, with the test method explained.
Can Film Affect the Beam Pattern?
The headlamp's optics do most of the beam shaping, but it's too absolute to say an overlay can never affect the result. Haze, bubbles, creases, contamination, lifted edges, surface texture, tint and lens deterioration can all scatter light. The completed lamp and beam are what actually matter.
MOT and Road-Use Implications
The DVSA manual assesses headlamp intensity, emitted colour and aim, and includes a defect for a product on the lens or light source that obviously reduces intensity or changes colour outside the requirements. A film supplier's description cannot guarantee an MOT pass.
Is the difference from clear PPF visible at night?
It may be small with a suitable high-clarity product, but only product data and testing can quantify it.
Does a VLT figure guarantee legality?
No. It doesn't establish the colour, intensity and beam performance of the complete installed lamp.
Can bubbles affect light?
Persistent bubbles, haze or contamination can scatter light and also indicate a poor installation.
Will PPF fix a cloudy lens?
No. The lens should be assessed and, where appropriate, restored before film is installed.
Can TAD guarantee an MOT pass after fitting film?
No. An independent tester assesses the vehicle presented on the day.
We only fit film documented as suitable for headlamp lenses, and check lamp operation after every install.
