Restoration & Safety

Headlight Restoration

At TAD Auto Detail, we carry out professional headlight restoration at your home or driveway — within 5 miles of North Wembley. Over time, polycarbonate headlight lenses yellow, cloud, and become opaque due to UV radiation and road contamination. Severely degraded headlights can reduce light output by up to 80%, creating a genuine safety hazard and a potential MOT failure. Our multi-stage wet-sand and machine polish process removes the oxidised surface layer and restores optical clarity — at a fraction of the cost of replacement.

3 Our Process

We arrive at your location with all restoration equipment. The surrounding paintwork is fully masked to protect it before any work begins. Wet sanding starts with 800 grit to remove the oxidised surface layer, then progresses through 1500, 2500, and 3000 grit for increasing clarity. A machine polisher with cutting and finishing compounds is then used to restore gloss and remove all sanding marks. A final hand-finish with ultra-fine polish achieves maximum optical clarity, and a UV ceramic coating is then applied to the lens surface to protect against future oxidation.

Who It's For

Headlight restoration is ideal for any vehicle with visibly yellowed, hazy, or clouded headlights. It's particularly valuable before an MOT inspection, before selling a vehicle, or for older vehicles where brand new replacement units are expensive or hard to source. If your headlights look significantly worse than they did when the car was new, restoration is the cost-effective answer.

Power Socket Required

We bring all equipment and materials to your location, including our own water supply — you do not need to provide a water tap. We do however need access to a standard household power socket to run our equipment and charge the batteries for our tools. Please ensure the socket is within 50 metres of where the car will be parked. If it's further away, let us know when booking so we can plan accordingly.

4 Frequently Asked Questions

  • Surrounding paintwork fully masked before sanding
  • Multi-stage wet sanding (800 through to 3000 grit)
  • Machine polish with cutting and finishing compounds
  • Ultra-fine hand finish for maximum clarity
  • UV Ceramic Coating applied to the restored lens

Wet sanding and polishing works on yellowing, clouding, and surface oxidation. If the lens is physically cracked, chipped, or has deep structural damage, restoration will not be effective and replacement will be required. We will assess this honestly before starting.

The results typically last 12 to 24 months before retreatment may be needed, depending on sun exposure and parking conditions. The included UV Ceramic Coating significantly extends the result compared to an untreated restoration.

Yes — and we recommend it. Restoring the lens first and then applying PPF protects the restored clarity and prevents future re-oxidation. Ask us for a combined package quote when booking.
